Bright and simple with and filigree detail – the Amerika Haus was built in 1956/57 as part of the international building exhibition by housing development, Interbau and modeled after the blueprints of architect Bruno Grimmek. The building provided a stage for transatlantic encounters, cultural exchanges, and visits from high-ranking politicians. Art was exhibited, film premieres were celebrated, and symposia and lectures were held. On a few occasions, the Amerika Haus was pelted with eggs and Molotov cocktails and eventually went into hibernation for a few years. Since 2014 it operates under C / O Berlin, as an exhibition house for photography offering plenty of space and for art, gatherings, and exchanges.
